It’s all about you this year!

The First Year Experience (FYE) program will offer workshops and events throughout the year to help you connect with college resources, excel in classes, and get comfortable on campus.

Events

Orientation

SPCC FYE Fall 2015 Orientation
Thursday, July 30 from 4:30-6:00pm at the SPCC OCH campus. Room 171 B.
At this Orientation event, you will meet and hear some FYE students from last year, learn about the FYE study hall/tutoring opportunity, meet with our Director of Academic Initiatives and learn about our “enrichment programs” such as the ePortfolio, Global and Honors Programs, Service Learning and a lot more! Refreshments will be provided and we will have some really cool "giveaways" Please do not miss this event. 

Thursday, August 13 from 4:30-6:00pm at the SPCC OCH campus. Room 171 B.

FYE 2015/2016 Activities Schedule
Weekly during the semester


Mindful Tuesdays
Join other students, faculty and staff on Tuesdays from 3:00-3:30 p.m in Building A Room 336 for a time of mindful meditation. You will learn how meditation can help one deal with anxiety, promote a good sense of well-being and happiness.

FYE Cohort Free Lunch Mondays in the Patriot Café between COM 231 and ACA 122 from 12:20 – 12:50pm. (Dates this free lunch will be offered: Jan 25, Feb 1, Feb 8, Feb 15, Feb 22 and Feb 29)

Student Coffee Fellowship
Beginning Wednesday, January 20, we will have a Weekly Wednesday student coffee Fellowship at Cathy’s Coffee in Indian Trail. Come join us from 8:00 a.m. until 8:50 p.m. for a time of free coffee, conversation and fun!

AUGUST

SPCC FYE Stand Up Paddle Boarding/Kayaking Event
Thursday morning, August 6, We will have an informal get together with some of the past years FYE students and the upcoming Fall cohort. Come meet your fellow classmates and peer mentors. We will meet at SPCC at 10am to go to the Tailrace Marina in Mt. Holly for a time of Stand Up Paddleboarding/Kayaking on the Catawba River for 2 hours. The cost is $20 per person (this includes your paddle and board/kayak rental for 2 hours). Transportation will be provided. Bring your own lunch. I will have a cooler of water/soda. More information is forthcoming. Please RSVP by July 30 at the FYE Orientation.

Union County Day of Caring
On Saturday, August 29, SPCC will be participating in the annual Union County Day of Caring. We will begin at a rally at Belk Stadium on the campus of Wingate University at 7:30am. Come join with other volunteers from our community to help senior citizens and those who are disabled with yard work and other projects around the county.

FYE Cohort Mid Semester Luncheon– OCH Campus – October 6 - 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Freaky Friday Fest -OCH Campus Library - Oct 30 - 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

NOVEMBER
Paintball Mania – Saturday, November 7. Meet at SPCC OCH Campus at 9:00am to head to Paintball Kingdom in Marshville. Cost is $10 for students. Email Shauna Loftis at sloftis@spcc.edu to sign up!

DECEMBER

FYE Cohort "almost the end of the semester" Luncheon - OCH Campus - 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

“It’s a Wonderful Life” Indian Trail Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting – SPCC FYE walks in this parade and we hand out Christmas candy and cheer while promoting our college. December 6 - 2:15 - 4:30 p.m.

Christmas Dinner at LaFrontera Mexican Cantina - following the Indian Trail Christmas Parade - December 6 - 5:00 p.m. - until

 

SPRING 2016 EVENTS


FYE Cohort Back to School Luncheon – Come join your peers in the Academic Support Center at OCH 12:20-1:00pm for a free lunch after COM 231 on Wednesday, January 20.

Spring Disc Golf – OCH Campus – Meet at the picnic tables behind Building B on Friday, February 26 at 9:30 am for a fun time of disc golf. We will play captains choice. Don't worry if you have never played, just come out, try it and have fun. Lunch on campus at the Patriot Cafe afterwards for anyone interested. There is no cost for disc golf, but if you want lunch afterwards, bring $ or bring your own lunch.

Spring Corn Hole Tournament – OCH Campus – Meet at the picnic tables behind Building B on Friday, March 11 at 9:30 am for a fun time of playing Corn Hole. Pizza Provided! BYOD (Bring your own drink)

Student Hiking Trip to Crowders Mountain – Saturday, April 16. Meet at SPCC OCH Campus at 9:00am. More information forthcoming
