Writing an ePortfolio Page around a Showcase Artifact

A collection of “Showcase Artifacts” make up a student’s best or most important works that can be shown to prospective employers or college admission committees in an ePortfolio. It showcases a student’s current aptitude to future teachers or employers and, it prepares students for the world of work through planning, reflection, skill development and portfolio documentation. Extracurricular activities such as civic involvement, volunteering, club or organization involvement, or a special event that is life-changing or significant may be included as a showcase artifact.

An ePortfolio page around a showcase artifact should include:

  • Overview of the assignment that led to your showcase artifact for the Core Skill or Program Outcome.
    • In what class did you complete the assignment?
    • In which semester did you complete the assignment?
    • What were the general instructions?
  • A link to the showcase artifact for the Core Skill or Program Outcome.
  • Artifacts are not created specifically for the ePortfolio, but are created as part of a student’s academic experience.
  • Artifacts include items such as:
    • Papers
    • PowerPoint presentations
    • Images
    • Bibliographies
    • Links to webpages
    • Videos
    • Business plan
    • Artwork
  • A reflection about your showcase artifact consisting of a minimum of three paragraphs. The reflection may be based on instructions given in class by an instructor or it may be based on one of the approaches outlined in the “Writing Resources-Reflective Writing” page of the ePortfolio website.

Here are some things to consider when writing an e-Portfolio Page around a showcase artifact:

  • Always think of your audience
  • Avoid the need for viewers to scroll
  • Check and double-check links and images
  • Maintain a consistent font
  • Be aware of and use white space
  • Sometimes less is more (ie: Keep it simple)
  • Avoid unnecessary “bells and whistles”, but consider incorporating multimedia where appropriate.
  • Be mindful of copyright status.

A process for reflection, adapted from East Carolina University:

  • What is the General Education Core Skill or Program Outcome?
  • Describe the requirements for the artifact.
  • Why is this artifact a good example of the standard?
  • Discuss changes that would benefit the artifact. If you would not make revisions, explain why.
  • How is this artifact representative of your future educational plans or career goals?
