The Associate in Arts – Elementary Education degree is part of the College Transfer Program, which is designed to parallel the freshman and sophomore years at a four-year college or university. Through the curriculum, students take general education course work in the areas of humanities, fine arts, mathematics, science, and social and behavioral science. These general education courses will enable students to gain a well-rounded education before transferring to pursue a bachelor’s degree.
College Transfer students may work toward an Associate in Arts (A.A.) or an Associate in Science (A.S.) degree. Students may attend full time or part time, during the day or evening. Classes are also available online. The various Pre-Majors help guide a student’s selection of courses to focus on an intended major.
The Pre-Major in Elementary Education is designed as a course selection guide for students who intend to major in Elementary Education at other institutions after completing their Associate in Arts degree at SPCC. The Pre-Major courses are aligned with North Carolina universities’ bachelor’s degree programs for the most beneficial transfer of courses.

During the first semester, students are assigned an advisor who will help select appropriate courses. All program courses are included in the NC Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA) and Independent Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (ICAA) so that completion of the degree will meet the general education requirements at any school in the University of North Carolina system or at any school that signed the ICAA. Both agreements and a list of ICAA schools are available below:
