Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Where are the SPCC Academic Support Centers located?
A: The L.L. Polk Academic Support Center is located in Room 207 of the Martin Technology Complex on the L.L. Polk Campus. The Ashley E. Richardson Academic Support Center is located in Room 155 of Building A on the Old Charlotte Highway Campus.

Q: How do I get help in a specific course?
A: Tutors at the Academic Support Centers offer support in courses of many departments. Schedule an appointment with a tutor online.

Q: Is anyone available to help me write a paper?
A: The Center has several writing tutors. Tutors are available either by appointment, or during drop-in tutoring. Schedule an appointment with a tutor online.

Q: What if I’m struggling in a math class?
A: SPCC tutors provide individual help for a variety of math classes. Schedule an appointment with a tutor online.

Individuals who use either Center must abide by the following policies:

  • Do not make or receive phone calls.
  • No food or drink in the Center.
  • Observe the SPCC Student Code of Conduct and all computer use policies.
  • Pay for printed materials using an SPCC Print Card (available for purchase at the business office.)
  • Don’t forget your flash drives and other items when you leave the Center.

Each Academic Support Center is open Monday – Thursday: 1:30 – 4:30pm, and Friday: 9am – 1pm.

Mission, Goals and Outcomes

Mission:
The mission of the South Piedmont Community College Academic Support Centers (ASC) is to serve students, faculty and staff by providing learning support opportunities in a nurturing environment that promote academic success, while supporting the College mission of learning, student success, and workforce and community development.


Goals:

  • To assist students in recognizing how they learn best.
  • To assist students in practicing improved study skills.
  • To assist students in applying strategies for increasing their self-confidence.
  • To assist students in improving their understanding of course subject matter.

Outcomes:

Program Outcomes Mapping to Strategic Goals Criteria for Success Measures
Student satisfaction rates with respect to recognizing how they learn will meet or exceed those of the previous year. South Piedmont Strategic Plan 2010-2011: Initiative 1, Outcome 1-A, Initiative 2, Outcome 4-B At least 80% of the students responding to the Academic Support Center User Survey will indicate an “Agree” or “Strongly Agree” rating with respect to the statement, “The services I received from the Academic Support Center gave me the skills to recognize how I learn best.”
Student satisfaction rates with respect to improved study skills will meet or exceed those of the previous year. South Piedmont Strategic Plan 2010-2011: Initiative 1, Outcome 1-A, Initiative 2, Outcome 4-B At least 80% of the students responding to the Academic Support Center User Survey will indicate an “Agree” or “Strongly Agree” rating with respect to the statement, “The services I received from the Academic Support Center helped me to practice improved study skills.”
Frequency and type of communication tactics targeting faculty, staff and student staff will meet or exceed those of the previous year. South Piedmont Strategic Plan 2010-2011: Initiative I, Outcome 2-B The Academic Support Center will communicate with faculty, staff and student staff via email at least twice each semester, and will distribute print collateral in high-traffic areas (hallways, library, student union and student success offices) at least twice each semester.
Delivery options for tutoring services will meet or exceed those of the previous year. South Piedmont Strategic Plan 2010-2011: Initiative I, Outcome 2-C, Initiative I, Outcome 3-A The Academic Support Center will deliver tutoring services each semester via a minimum of three delivery methods – drop-in, by appointment, and online.
