Three SPCC students’ photos selected for book

Three South Piedmont Community College students were selected as finalists and have had photos chosen for the “2011 Best of College Photography” book published by Photographer’s Forum magazine. There were nearly 14,000 entries in the competition for collegiate photographers from around the world. From that group, there were eight winners, 1,570 finalists and 100 honorable mentions.

“I just thought it was so important for them to do, gaining confidence through global exposure,” said Graphic Design Instructor Cheryl Hicks, who had each of the students in at least one class last semester.

The three were Regina Coley of Waxhaw, Judith Lambert of Indian Trail and Kim Gibson of Marshville.

“I thought it was pretty cool that three of us out of the school got it,” Coley said.

“I thought it was awesome,” Lambert added. “You’ve got so many people that you’re up against from around the world. I hope we can keep this going (in future editions).”

“It just makes me feel special,” said Gibson, who graduated in May. “It made me feel like I accomplished something. It’s the first time I’ve ever been recognized for photography.”

Gibson’s photo, called “Me and My Shadow,” was shot looking down through the grate on a railroad bridge in West Virginia. It shows two shadows of herself – one on the grate and one on the concrete column beneath it. “I thought it was cool,” she said.

Lambert’s photo, called “Catawba River in June,” was shot last year in Lancaster County, S.C., and depicts a tranquil scene along the river. “It was peaceful and calming,” she said. “The colors were vibrant.”

Coley’s photo, a close-up of a flower blossom called “Standing Ovation,” was a winner earlier this year in the college’s competition to determine what to send to the North Carolina Community College System’s Art Exhibition. Although she likes the photo, she does not remember where she shot it.

All three photos can be seen online at http://pfmagazine.com. Go to “Winners Gallery,” then select “2011: Best of College Photography” and “Finalists.” Each photographer can be searched by name.
