SPCC Awards Endowed & Community Scholarships

South Piedmont Community College has awarded a number of endowed and community scholarships.
Alpha Helms of Monroe and Tarsha Maske of Wingate were each awarded a Ben and Lillian Rivers Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship honors the memory of Ben Rivers, a former Anson County sheriff, and Lillian Gray Rivers, a businesswoman and teacher in Anson County. The scholarship is awarded annually to selected students enrolled in the criminal justice, business or early childhood programs with at least a 3.0 grade point average.
Five students were selected to receive a CMH Flooring Products Scholarship. Recipients were Jason Griffin of Monroe, Sara Davenport of Charlotte, Heather Gaither of Indian Trail, Mary Moore of Monroe and Adria Scarborough of Monroe.
Caryn Anderson of Marshville has been awarded a Britt Family Scholarship, established by Harold and Rosemary Britt. Preference is given to graduates of Forest Hills High School.
Two students were awarded James A. Hardison Endowed Scholarships. Recipients were Katie Underwood of Peachland and Alicia Gaddy of Polkton. The SPCC Board of Trustees, the late Jeff Cloud, and friends and family established the scholarship in memory of James A. Hardison to fund merit scholarships for business students. Jimmy Hardison served on the SPCC Board of Trustees and chaired the fund drive that created the Lockhart-Taylor Center.
Brittney Chambers of Monroe and Jennifer Watkins of Matthews received the North Carolina Community College System Nursing and Teachers Scholarship. The scholarship was founded by the North Carolina General Assembly to assist students in teaching and nursing programs and help meet the need for teachers and nurses in North Carolina.
Karen Soles of Ellerbe has been selected to receive a Susan Margaret Horne Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship was established in memory of Susan M. Horne by her family. Mrs. Horne was a registered nurse and certified nurse anesthetist. The scholarship is awarded on a merit basis to students in the allied health programs with preference given to students in practical nursing or surgical technology.
Susan Salazar of Indian Trail received the Hoyle W. Lee Endowed Scholarship. The scholarship was established to honor the memory of Mr. Lee, owner and operator of Heritage Hills Nursing Home in Wadesboro. Recipients must be in an allied health program.
Tana Haigler of Monroe and Stacy Sikula of Monroe each received a Citizens South Bank Scholarship awarded to deserving Union County residents.
Lynn Gardelle of Polkton and Casey Pegram of Wadesboro were each awarded a Catherine Elizabeth Covington Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship fund was established by Anne Covington Leary, Miss Covington’s grandmother and a longtime trustee and friend of the college. Miss Covington was a recent high school graduate and soon-to-be college freshman at the time of her death.
Two students received the State Employees Credit Union Scholarship. Juanita Johnson of Monroe and Donna Mizok of Weddington will receive a $2,500 scholarship renewable for a second year.
Tammie Hammack of Indian Trail has been awarded the Creative Food Concepts Scholarship, established by Creative Food Concepts to assist Union County students pursuing an associate’s degree.
Whitney Baucom of Marshville received the District Governor Lois M. Crumpler Rotary Scholarship for GED graduates continuing their education at SPCC. Mrs. Crumpler served as governor of Rotary International District 7680 and served the community many years as executive vice president of SPCC.
Frank Dicharry of Indian Trail was awarded the Pat Johnson Memorial Scholarship. Mrs. Johnson, who died unexpectedly in 2006, was a Computer Programming instructor at SPCC for 21 years.
Karen Arney of Waxhaw and April Griffin of Monroe have been awarded the First Charter Bank Scholarship, designated for deserving Union County residents.
The Elizabeth Nelme Shelton Scholarship was awarded to Kelly Morton of Marshville and Jennifer Watkins of Matthews. The Shelton Scholarship is awarded to second year Associate Degree Nursing students. Robert Shelton began the scholarship in memory of his mother, Elizabeth Nelme Shelton.
