SPCC HOSTS CONFERENCE FOR LOCAL CHILD CARE PROFESSIONALS

South Piedmont Community College hosted the sixth annual Creating the Future Conference for child care providers Saturday, June 23, on the Old Charlotte Highway Campus in Monroe.

Childcare workers, home daycare operators and daycare center directors attended workshops on a wide variety of subjects that included music education for young children, recognizing the abused or neglected child, fire safety for daycare facilities, encouraging fitness and reducing childhood obesity and helping grieving children cope.

Paula Arrington and Nanette Ausby, representatives of UNC-TV, led a session on how to incorporate educational television in lessons. Elizabeth Crais of UNC-Chapel Hill led workshops on detecting communication difficulties in young children. Tanya Dennis, an early childhood trainer, delivered the keynote address on the important role childcare workers play in developing the childcare environment.

Sponsors of the conference were SPCC; Child Care Resources, Inc.; N.C. Division of Child Development; Union County Child Care Association; Union County Family Child Care Home Association; and United Way of Central Carolinas.
