SPCC Receives Contributions from Local Businesses

South Piedmont Community College recently received contributions from three Monroe based businesses. Each contribution was designated to advance a specific program at SPCC.

State Utility Contractors, Inc. wrote the SPCC Foundation a check to purchase 11 laptops for instructors in the General Studies Department. “This gift has allowed all general studies faculty to be able to use PowerPoint, animations, and other technology in the classroom,” Heather Woodson, General Studies Department chair, said. The instructors are using the laptops in their classes this semester.

Representatives from OMNOVA Solutions, Inc. presented the SPCC Foundation a check for $12,000 to expand and improve the Continuing Education Mobile Computer Lab which OMNOVA initially funded in 2005. Jon Schrader, director of operations, and Ann Yow, human resources manager, presented the check and said they hope to use the lab at OMNOVA soon. The mobile lab is taken to businesses and industries to provide on site training. OMNOVA’s latest contribution will add eight laptops, a mobile printer and software providing a total of 15 mobile workstations.

Scott Health and Safety donated four air packs to the fire and safety program. An air pack is a self-contained breathing apparatus similar to what is used by scuba divers. Firefighters use these packs during live burns to provide practice in controlling and extinguishing fires. Jason Patterson, project manager, and Rick Hofmeister, service support manager, of Scott Health and Safety presented the packs to Todd Morris, director of Industry Services, and Dan Stowe, director of Protective Services, at SPCC.
