SPCC Receives Approval for Associate Degree Nursing Program

South Piedmont Community College has received approval from the North Carolina Board of Nursing to begin an Associate Degree Nursing program. The ADN program will give individuals the training necessary to become registered nurses. Following a visit from the nursing board, SPCC was notified that the first class of 20 students may enroll in August 2006.

Anticipating the ADN program would receive state approval, a total of 224 people from Anson, Union, Mecklenburg, Richmond, Stanly and Scotland counties, as well as South Carolina, applied for admission. Twenty applicants have been selected to form the first class.

A grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust of Winston-Salem aided in the startup of the ADN program. This program will help meet the high demand for registered nurses in Anson and Union counties and the surrounding area.

“We are most appreciative that the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust has joined with our other supporters in order to meet the need for registered nurses,” said SPCC President John McKay.

Joyce Long has been hired as the ADN program director. She received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from East Carolina University and her master’s degree in nursing from the University of South Carolina at Columbia. Since 1988, she has taught at Presbyterian School of Nursing at Queens University of Charlotte.

Associate Degree Nursing is one of 10 medical career programs offered by SPCC. College credit programs leading to a diploma or an associate's degree are Associate Degree Nursing, Medical Assisting, Medical Office Administration, Medical Sonography, Practical Nursing, Radiation Therapy Technology, Surgical Technology and Therapeutic Massage.
